Spring temperatures were average, creating nice growth in the vineyard. \u003cbr\u003eMeticulous management of our vineyard blocks allowed us to manage the rapid growth and achieve \u003cbr\u003eour targeted crop-load sizes. June and July were very hot, one of the hottest on re- cord for Washing\u003cbr\u003eton State. We saw veraison fairly early in July, about 2-3 weeks earlier than usual. Having such a hot \u003cbr\u003estart to summer led to rapid ripening. When grapes ripen too fast, we see lower acid levels. Seeing \u003cbr\u003esome of the lowest acid levels in years isn’t a big issue as it is easily corrected in the cellar. Overall, \u003cbr\u003ethe 2023 vintage stands out as truly exceptional. The grapes we harvested during this season were \u003cbr\u003eamong the ripest we’ve witnessed in years. The flavors are amazing from this vintage – our white \u003cbr\u003ewines showcase bright tropical fruits with balanced, brisk acidity, and the red wines are robust yet \u003cbr\u003eelegant and finesse in structure. This softens the piercing acid of the Pinot Gris and gives the wine some richness and stability. The wine is sulfured and rests sur lie until late Spring. After racking and processing, the wine is returned to the barrel for 2 months before bottling. In Burgundy, white wines are limited to Aligoté, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay. Starting in 1990, Au Bon Climat made single varietal Pinot Blanc, and with the 1995 vintage, a single varietal Pinot Gris. These wines showed great promise, leading to the first Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc blend in 1997. The wine was so successful that it has become a staple in the Au Bon Climat portfolio ever since, with the percentages of each variety changing with each vintage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Pinot Gris primarily comes from the Sierra Madre Vineyard, one of the oldest vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley.
