Lush aromas of decadent Meyer lemon pulp and lemon drop candies melt away as a smoky flint jumps from the glass. The palate soars with zesty acidity bracing flavours of briny oyster shell, crushed slate, piquant notes of lime pith, and white pepper carry us home—a beautiful Chardonnay with many years ahead of it. There’s a hint of sweet, melony fruit on the palate, and it has a balanced feel (but perhaps less austere) and a clean, rounded finish. It’s a very pretty white to drink over the next 10 years. 250 cases were produced. The percentage of new oak is a generous sixty-five percent for this bottling in 2022. The bouquet is very expressive for a young Walter Scott chardonnay, wafting from the glass in a lovely, quite floral blend of pear, golden delicious apple, white lilies, apple blossoms and a touch of lavender, macadamia nut, lovely minerality and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a lovely core of fruit, fine mineral drive and cut, seamless balance and a long, poised and succulent finish. Again, the backend grip and lift are most impressive. Probably due to its higher percentage of new oak used during the élevage, the 2022 Koosah Vineyard chardonnay is the least reductive of these fine single vineyard bottlings this year, so if I was tempted to drink one of the wines in the first blush of youth, I would definitely reach for the Koosah first! Fine, fine juice.

94

Vinous
Review Date: 05/2024

Crushed rocks, mint and sage give way to freshly sliced Granny Smith apples as the 2022 Chardonnay Koosah Vineyard blossoms in the glass. This mixes vividly ripe, citrus-laced orchard fruits with zesty acidity and hints of sour melon as it flows across the palate with silken textures. Notes of sweet spice linger above a salty concentration as the 2022 finishes with admirable length—lightly structure and remarkably fresh, with a mineral crunchiness. This is a ripe interpretation of Koosah, yet it has the acidity to balance. Aromas of orange zest and tonic water garnished with a lime wedge make cameo appearances. A rich, elegant mouthfeel matches up with flavors like Anjou pears and green tea and roasted rice. Pacific bluefin tuna sushi is calling Koosah's name. *Editors' Choice* (MA)

93

Wine Advocate
Review Date: 07/2024

The 2022 Chardonnay Koosah Vineyard comes from vines planted in volcanic soils in 2016 at 720 to 1,080 feet of elevation. It was fermented and matured in 65% new, 350- and 500-liter barrels for 12 months and finished with three months in stainless steel. It is delicate and pure on the nose: fragrant pear, white pepper, apricot and allspice are laced with integrated matchstick character that allures rather than repels. The light-bodied palate offers deeply concentrated flavors, though it is still youthfully coiled. It has a taut spine of acidity and a long, perfumed finish. Give it 2–3 years in bottle or a few hours in a decanter. 225 cases were made. Gently crushed and then pressed in a bladder press. Fermented with ambient yeasts in 350-litre and 500-litre barrels (65% new) and aged for 12 months with minimal bâtonnage. 100% malolactic conversion. Finished for 3 months in a stainless-steel tank. Medium lemon in colour. Flinty reduction, Honeycrisp apple and spicy floral notes. Rounder and riper on the palate than the Sojeau with a touch more sweetness to the fruit. 17.5/20 points (SCJ)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0649/9713/0464/files/walter-scott-koosah-vineyard-chardonnay_1.jpg?v=1767737900
